Welcome

I go to school in Portsmouth, NH at The Robert J. Lister Academy, I have a mission to go to Costa Rica! The reason for this mission is first of all I decided to take a class all about Costa Rica and believe me it's no walk in the park on a sunny day. I have to fund raise $1800.00 for myself. I am currently studying tourism for when I get to Costa Rica. Everything about Costa Rica is so amazing to me, I love animals, nature, adventure, and the travel. For myself this trip is a once in a life time chance. The reason the trip is a once in a life time chance for me is because I don't come from a wealthy family at all so it really cuts what I get to do.

This trip could even be life changing to myself as well as others in my class. I have always loved the outdoors and animals so its amazing that I get to do something like this and pursue my dreams. Before this year i have always been a slacker in school, this year really changed me and my teachers really showed me to be mature and do what I want to do. I really want to have more knowledge on the Costa Rican culture, lifestyle, and just live the life of the Costa Rican for 10 days. As of right now we have already started to fund raise by having a car wash, gardening at our school, held a booth at the Stratham fair (and met Gov. John Lynch), we raffled a laptop. If you would like to donate to our class, or to myself please contact my email. mshattuck.student@gmail.com
or you can contact my teach Bryan Mascio at

A day on the horses!

Well today is nice and sunny its about 7:30 am and the breeze feels crisp and clean! The sun is trying to peek through the clouds but can't quite make it. The Desafio van just pulled up and we're loading into it and about to go. We're driving to go horseback riding to San Luise Waterfall! The drive is starting to amaze me with the colors and the scenery. I just looked to my left and realized we're right next to a cliff and all I can see is tree tops, cows and horses that look like ants.
I'm getting more and more excited because I can finally see the horses saddled up and ready to go. Were here and getting out of the car, thank goodness because my legs are starting to cramp. Once we're getting out of the van the guide points at me then he just pointed to a horse and says hes all yours. By looking around, everyone is hopping on their horses and we're about to leave.

Yes, were off and heading down a steep dirt road, the scenery is absolutely amazing! There are hills beyond hills, green beyond green and the color of the sky is un-imaginably mixed colors of pink, blue, purple and red. Woah!, there are so many flowers, most of them just look fake and you just get temped to touch and feel the reality kick in. There is a small river ahead and it looks like Bryan is going first to record us going through it on the horses. We made it through but my horse keeps wanting to stop and I feel bad because he is very sweaty and tired. Kristine is trotting up next to me and her horse does not look too happy to see my horse i'm trying to get away from that horse but OUCH he just kicked me! This ride is starting to hurt, I have cramps and I am wearing a tank top with a heavy backpack, but from all of the addrenaline kicking in because of my obsession with horses I will be fine!

Time is starting to fly by, we just started to gallop and I see the clearing that we have to get off and tie up the horses also get ready to hike to the waterfall. Yum, lunch was good even though we have been eating PB&J since we got here, but with everything else were doing its WELL worth it. My legs are killing me and so is my butt from the sattle but whatever it is so hot out, its going to amazing to just jump right into that waterfall! The hike is rough, but we have done way worse in the past couple days. Im just getting more and more anxious I just wan't to run ahead of everyone.

Yes ha-ha Winston, Josh, Brittney and myself are ahead of the group and made it to the waterfall first. We were just about to jump right in, unitl we felt the water! After laying in the sun and heating up some more I finally start to walk over and just jumpped right in, oh yeah but not before I surprised Jessica by ripping her into the water with me! Its been a couple hours now and I think were just about to hike back. We made it back to the spot where we tied the horses up quicker than it took us to hike to the waterfall, and were getting our helmets back on. We are on the horses to go home, tired, and tomorrow I will have some more stories for you! Bye

I wanted to say THANK YOU Kristi, Kelly Sue and also to everyone who has donated anything to use weather it was a dollar or a hundred dollars. Thank you Bryan for starting this class!! Chapters 13,14, and 15

WALKING WITH WOLF

Chapter 13
Wolf was born into a very loving family, raised with the privileges of having options. His family is also very supportive in the decisions he makes, weather they are right or wrong. It seems like Wolf's family all around is accepting, loving, supportive, and strong. I can relate to this chapter because my family is also very loving, supportive even if my decisions aren't the best, i do have the option to make my own decisions, my family is accepting of everyone not just people that are in the family. The Shattuck's and the Gibb's are a very strong family and no one will ever break us down!
Chapter 14
Wolf and Lucky decided to move to Costa Rica, they figured it would be much better for their children. When wolf and Lucky moved they did have to make the decision to leave a lot behind, which they did. While in Costa Rica they went through some minor setbacks but nothing extreme. The decision they made was the best for their sons. Because wolf and Lucky decided to move to Costa Rica their sons didn't have to make the same choices Wolf and his friends made about the military conscription.

Chapter 15
The conditions that Wolf and everyone went through just to look at the beautiful scenery. They would get drenched in water just to walk the trails and keep them clear. But despite the miserable conditions and possible dangers the guards still manage to maintain a steady chorus of laughter and gossip. As they cook their meals in the dark not paying any attention to their wet clothes and tired bodies. These people left their comfortable beds, houses, and families behind to maintain and manage the forest.

PASS PORT!!

I got my passport finally! I am so excited to have the passport in my hand and I can actually say "I am going to Costa Rica!" The feeling that I keep getting when I think about the trip is kind of over whelming but it feels good to do something that could be once in a life time as well. The fact that I am getting the chance to do something that I would not have been able to do if it was not for my school is just amazing, the feeling is almost unreal because our school goes above and beyond for us as you can see. Its weird to think that in 3 months were actually getting on a plane and flying to San Jose and doing what we've been planning since last summer! We have done so much and we have come so far. We have officially purchased our plane tickets! Its amazing its OFFICIAL!! Walking with wolf is becoming more and more real!

Almost There!!

Sorry I haven't had any blog post for a little while. Recently on December 19,2010 my house burned down, my family and I lost everything we owned. This was the most terrible thing that has ever happened to us, but with all the support there was some good outcome at the same time. Our class had a a day where everyone had to choose a Costa Rican food to cook and feed to our school. Unfortunately I was not able to be in school, so another student, Sammi, offered to bring some of the food that our class cooked so i could still be a part of it. I think that was amazing to see the school still trying hard to make sure I don't feel left out during this hard time.
I looked kind of far back into the book when Wolf and Lucky's tent burned down and they lost everything. I know EXACTLY how they felt when it first happened, and I know how it felt when the shock wore off. Anytime that you hear about something like this you really dont know what it feels like until it happenes to you personally. I just wanted to say I am very greatful that all of us got out of the house safely! Thank you to everyone who has done anything to help, even if it was just saying "I am here for you!" I also wanted to say I am very sorry to anyone who has ever had to go through something as terrible as this. Having to go through this is one of the most terrible things that could ever happen to anybody.
